Gardening in Small Spaces

A small yard can feel like a challenge when creating the garden of your dreams. But as this video shows, a small space doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice privacy or comfort for a pleasant garden.
A little creativity will go a long way toward creating a pleasant garden in a small yard. In this example, the homeowner chose to block out the sight of a busy street with a fence covered in climbing vines, rather than an ugly privacy fence. The front sidewalk is bordered by a medium-height hedge, which defines the yard without feeling like a wall.
The homeowner then created pathways in the garden, which lead from the front lawn to the more secluded backyard, ending with a private seating area near a pond.
Finally, the garden beds are carefully arranged to include the existing trees on the property. The home owner’s favorite plants are arranged for maximum year-round beauty, with the taller plants providing a nice backdrop at the edges of the property. Shorter blooms border the pathways, while climbing vines cover fences and a garden arch.
